Dentures and bridges: replacing missing teeth

Missing teeth can make eating and speaking harder. Dentures and bridges are two common ways to fill the gap.
What happens if you leave a gap after extraction
Denture or bridge?
- Complete denture: replaces all the upper or lower teeth.
- Partial denture: replaces one or more teeth, and comes out for cleaning.
- Bridge: fixed in place with support from the teeth beside the gap, and doesn't come out.
The dentist advises what suits you after examining your remaining teeth and gums.
How they are made
The dentist takes a mould of your mouth. The denture or bridge takes time to make, and is fitted at another visit.
Caring for dentures
- Take them out and brush them with soft soap every morning and night. Don't use toothpaste, which can damage them.
- Rinse them in cold water after meals.
- Clean them over a basin of water or a soft towel, so they don't break if dropped.
- Unless your dentist says otherwise, take them out at night and keep them in water.
- Brush your gums, tongue and remaining teeth with fluoride toothpaste morning and night.
- Start with softer food. It can take a few weeks to get used to them.
When to be seen
- Dentures feel loose, slip, or click when you talk.
- Dentures are causing pain.
- Dentures have broken. Bring all the pieces.
- Gums are very red or bleeding, or you have bad breath.

Can I sleep in my dentures?
Take them out at night unless your dentist advises otherwise. There is a risk of choking on them in your sleep, and of gum infection and tooth decay.
How long do dentures last?
They can last for years with good care. They can loosen as your gums and jaw change shape, so keep getting them checked.
How much does it cost?
The chamber consultation fee is Tk 300. Treatment cost is given once the examination shows what is needed.
