After a tooth extraction: what to do and what to avoid
The first 24 hours matter most. A blood clot forms where the tooth was. This clot is a natural bandage that covers the bone and nerve.
Mistakes to avoid after an extraction
What to do on the first day
- Bite on gauze for 30-45 minutesThe pressure stops the bleeding and lets the clot settle.
- RestAvoid heavy work or exercise on the first day, because bleeding can restart.
- Eat cold, soft foodWait until the numbness wears off, and chew on the other side. You can hold an ice pack against your cheek.
- Swallow your salivaSpitting can disturb the clot.
What to avoid for 24 hours
- No spitting, rinsing or straws. A strong pull can dislodge the clot.
- No smoking. It raises the risk of dry socket.
- No hot food.
- Don't touch the area with your tongue or finger.
From the next day
- Rinse gently with mild salt water.
- Brush your other teeth as usual, and take care around the area.
- Return to normal food gradually.
How much bleeding is normal?
A little blood in your saliva is common for a day or two. If it bleeds again, fold clean gauze and bite firmly for 30-45 minutes. If it still doesn't stop, call your dentist.
What to do about pain
Some pain is normal once the numbness wears off. Take painkillers as your dentist advises. If you take blood-thinning medicine, tell your dentist beforehand, and don't stop it on your own.
What is a dry socket?
If the clot comes away, the bone can be left exposed. This is a dry socket. See a dentist quickly if you have severe pain 2-4 days later.
When to get urgent help
- Bleeding doesn't stop after biting on gauze.
- Swelling or pain is getting worse, or you have a fever.
- You have trouble swallowing or breathing. Go to a hospital without delay.
How it heals
With care it heals gradually. New gum grows, and later the socket fills with bone.
